Hair Care Routine

Okay y’all, I’ve finally written out my much desired hair care routine. As my followers have grown over on my Instagram, I’ve gotten so many compliments on my hair and requests for details – my favorite is when someone simply drops a “#HairGoals” comment on my pic!

Growing up, I always lusted after the straight, smooth hair of my friends. But, I was the curly headed little girl who always wore a ponytail because neither I, nor my mom, could tame the mane. But now, as topknots, mom-buns, and messy braids have taken over social media, thick & wild hair is trendy! Nappy heads unite!

I’m naturally blessed with thick, full, curly hair from dad. But after years of processing it, I lost the intrinsic soft curl and replaced it with formidable frizz. So for the last 6 months, I’ve worked to grow it longer and stronger, by taking a 30-day no heat challenge – completed in July – and investing in cruelty-free products that foster the integrity and health of my hair.

Also, clutch your pearls girls, but I absolutely disagree with frequent cuts for trying to grow your hair out! I get my hair cut once a year at a max. When I do go in for a cut, my stylist puts on an all-over deep brown + a 2-step hydration mask.

Because my hair is so thick, I don’t have issues with oil so I only wash about once per week to week and half – with dry shampoo in between!

Wash-Day Routine:

  1. Brush with WetBrush
  2. Wet completely
  3. Wash with 1 quarter-sized drop of OGX Coconut Milk Shampoo – focusing on scalp
  4. Repeat – focusing on ends
  5. Rinse Completely
  6. Wash again from scalp to ends – washing twice is important!
  7. Brush with WetBrush, pull into loose pony
  8. Cover ponytail with OGX Coconut Milk Conditioner – let sit for 5 min
  9. Rinse Completely
  10. Brush with WetBrush
  11. Squeeze excess water out – DO NOT rub with towel
  12. Spray ends with OGX Coconut Milk shine spray
  13. Brush with WetBrush
  14. Allow to Air-dry
  15. Style as usual & enjoy your soft, smooth, shiny hair!

(side note: can you tell how much I LOVE the WetBrush…)

I typically do not blow-dry my hair, because I strive to schedule washing with ample time to air-dry, as I like to avoid any unnecessary heat exposure and processing. To grow it, you have to be all about minimizing breakage, which is why the WetBrush is your BFF, bestie for the restie, ride or DIE brush! It is THE best brush on the market in my opinion.

Since I have naturally curly/wavy hair, I usually either braid it and let it dry, or pull it back into a low pony to dry. Once I dry, I style the top layer with a wand, as shown below, and spray with for hold. When I style it this way, it lasts 3-4 days without me having to restyle.

When I start to get a little oily before washing, I wear top-knots. I’ve spent so long trying to find a way to wear my hair up without it falling or hurting. I’ve tried many different styles of hair-ties, clips, and used a billion and one bobby pins. Nothing worked until my little sister let me try her telephone cord ties.

These offer the perfect amount of elasticity to hold my 20+ inches of hair on top of my head, just how I placed it, with no issues or pain! As shown here!

I love them and wish I would’ve known of them a long time ago – they are a thick haired girls dream! Popped ties are in my past and I am so excited about the integrity and durability of these lil cuties.

If you have any more specific questions, DM me on Insta or email me! I’d be happy to answer.
