Christmas Traditions, old + new

Yesterday morning, my family of four piled into the truck and hit I-20 to West Monroe, Louisiana. Angel is home for a bit before her next phase of treatment in Houston, so my mom and cousin worked to plan a surprise Christmas celebration for her. If you read my Thanksgiving post, you know holidays have been different this year, but nothing will stop us from being together. Our traditions continued, and I’m so excited to share them with you!

1. Photos by the Tree

Typically, we set plans for Christmas while we’re all together for Thanksgiving. This year’s gathering was more impromptu, so we’re missing a few folks!

2. Gingerbread Houses

Usually, Ava and I build our houses together, and then the kids get together to decorate gingerbread cookies. This year, we saved all the fun for one day!

3. Sausage Balls

I can’t remember a Christmas without these. As a kid, I looked forward to this savory and delicious southern tradition way more than Christmas candies! This year, my sister Ava and cousin Jase made them – so it was even more special!

1 roll spicy Jimmy Dean sausage

2 cups Heart Smart Bisquick

2 cups shredded cheese

Mix all ingredients together, roll into even balls + bake at 350 degrees until golden – about 15-20 minutes

4. Playing Cards

This is my favorite tradition, even though I’m pretty slow at it and never win. We play a game called Blitz, where we partner-up and play until a team reaches a score of 100. If you Google Blitz, the card game that comes up is not our game – so I’m not sure how our game came to be, but we’ve always played it. Growing up, when we all lived in the same area, the adults played every Sunday. When I was about 8, they let me start playing, and I look forward to it every time we go home! We even get boyfriends to play as a sort of initiation into the family (it’s a fast-paced, loud + rowdy game) and Cole loves to hate it!

5. Once Upon a Pancake

We started a new tradition this year – writing in the Once Upon a Pancake book! This book was gifted to me by the company, and comes with over 100 pages of prompts, spaces to sketch, and plenty of room for imaginations to blossom. I plan to bring it out every Christmas, pass it around, have everyone complete a few lines, and save it as a fun family heirloom.
